Asbestos RoofToxic, ugly and very inflexible. Asbestos roofing was popular in the past but you won’t see this around now. This is our second most popular type of roof to replace. Luckily we also operate an asbestos removal division of our company which specialise in the safe removal of the existing asbestos.
Replacing an asbestos roof with a new colorbond metal roofThere’s nothing worse than living in your home or business knowing that asbestos is around. We find people tend to avoid renovations or home improvements in areas which have asbestos present. It can be very frustrating to work around. Everyone knows, they will need to get rid of the asbestos eventually and studies have shown that it’s positive for your resale value. The good news for you is that when you combine these works with one of our standard metal roof replacement jobs, you’ll save money and time than if you did the two jobs separately.
Other Adjoining Asbestos materialThe replacement process may include other areas such as guttering, fascia, eaves, walls, flooring, fences and other areas around the structure. This is very common and it can be very cost effective to get it all removed at once as there’s significant set-up costs during the removal process regardless of the amount of asbestos that needs to be removed. Decramastic RoofDecramastic tiles were a short-lived trend in Australia back in the 80’s. They have fallen out of favour both in design and supply which makes them an expensive option if you’re looking to replace them with the same material. There’s one or two suppliers in the whole Australia and New Zealand region so good luck finding an affordable solutions if you want to keep the same look!
Replacing a decramastic roof with a new Colorbond metal roofWe get calls from people with decramastic roofs ever day who need a new option and to be honest with you, there really is no point hanging onto your decramastic roofing tiles. Quite simply, the new metal options such as Colorbond are superior in almost every way – durability, longevity, dent resistance, colour, price etc. This is the reason we don’t have that material in stock. So if you have a decramastic roof we strongly recommend you look at another material to replace it with. Read more about Decramastic Roofing here.
The difference between Colorbond, Corrugated Iron Sheeting and ZincalumeColorbond is powdercoated (coloured) metal. There’s other less well known brands some of which can be cheaper per sheet, but we believe that you can’t go past Colorbond in terms of its quality and longevity. This is one of the main reasons why it’s such a popular choice in Australia's harsh climate. Zinc aluminium (also known as zincalume) is "the shiny silver" roofing product you see. Zincalume is a brand name for this product. Galvanised iron was previously used, but now zinc aluminium (the same look) is favoured. There is no difference in quality between zinc aluminium and colorbond (powdercoated steel) as they both have the same base metal and thickness, it’s purely an aesthetics difference based on the finish.
Replacing a metal, corrugated iron or Zincalume roof with a new metal Colorbond roofQuite often, general deterioration, rust, storm damage, insulation, style and colour are the main reasons why you would need a new roof using the same or similar material as before. There’s nothing like that brand new, clean look that a new Colorbond roof can bring to your home. Unless your roof was installed at different times to your guttering and pipes, you generally are better off getting everything replaced at once. More answers to your questions can be found on our Colorbond page
Tiled RoofsTerracotta or ceramic tiled roofs can still work quite well aesthetically with Italian or Spanish styled homes, but that’s about the only reason you’d consider sticking with the same material.
Replacing Tiled Roofs with a new Metal Colorbond Roof9 times out of 10, we find that homeowners who need to replace their old tiled roofs, will go with a new metal roof option. Besides, they were used a lot in Roman times, but it’s the 21 Century now. Metal roofs have a few obvious advantages. They do not weight as much, they aren’t prone to cracking or chipping with our Queensland hail storms, and they last much longer. You’d also be surprised how well they match or improve the existing home style.

We specialise in the following:
Roof Replacement vs Re-roofingSometimes in the industry the term ‘Re-roofing’ is used to mean the replacement of an existing roof. Essentially they mean the same thing.
The Advantages of Metal Roof Sheeting
Resale ValueOver time, metal roofs tend to add lasting value to homes where other materials tend to diminishing the value. If you have older materials, like decramastic tiles, they can be in short supply and hence, more expensive to replace, maintain or repair. Asbestos roofs don’t do you any favours either as it adds an annoyance to any future remodelling or renovations. Real Estate agents call us all the time to get an idea of how much a replacement would cost so they can factor that into their price estimates.
Durability and LongevityIn South East Queesland, we have harsh climatic conditions, often with threat of extreme heat, high winds, hail, falling trees, heavy rains and in some areas even fire. Metal is a high quality, robust roofing material that has taken huge leaps forward in design in recent years. When properly installed, metal roofs have been proven to be longer lasting than all other conventional roofing materials. One very popular brand is called Colorbond. In fact, they generally give you peace of mind for 40-60 years. In comparison, most other roofing types will require replacement 2-4 times. However, longevity is just one factor, they are also low maintenance meaning they resist the growth of moss or mould and don’t crack. Resistance to cracking and chipping is also another major advantage. Clay or slate tiles tend to be susceptible to chipping and cracking when objects fall on them like hail, branches and general storm debris. With such little maintenance required, choosing metal for your roof restoration is the possibly the best option.
Aesthetics and StyleForget the old corrugated tin roofs that are synonymous with Australian outback living. It’s the 21st century and you can get your roof in a huge variety of styles, colours and materials to ensure that you are getting a product that compliments your home perfectly. Bluescope’s famous Colorbond product is a popular choice in Australia for large roofing jobs, however there’s also other corrugated steel roofing products out there in the market. The point is that, you can get these materials in many different colours and finishes so matching your existing structure’s colour scheme or style is easy. The wide range of colours and textures now available in metal roofing blows away any misconceptions about lack of visual appeal. With a colour choice just as wide ranging as other popular roofing materials, metal will suit your home or building whether the style is modern or traditional. A metal roof will also stay looking good for much longer than other roofing materials. We can also help you with Patios and Patio roofing too.
Energy EfficiencyDepending on your final choice of materials, metal roofs can be very energy efficient, especially with insulation and venting additions. With the right choices, you can optimise the heating and cooling requirements of your home and spend less on your energy bills. In some cases, a reflective metal roof surface reflects heat and can reduce cooling costs by up to 40%.
Light and FlexibleMany people don’t realise that metal roofs have a lower overall weight than tiled roofs so it assists with preserving the structural integrity of the house, by putting less strain on the foundations and supporting beams.

FREQUENTLY asked questions
It is a group of naturally occurring minerals, mined from deep underground. There are three main types that were used in Australia, Chrysotile (white), Crocidolite (blue), and Amosite (brown or grey).
Asbestos was an extremely popular building material prior to the 1990’s. Since then the use of asbestos has been banned after it was found to cause serious health problems to humans if exposed to airborne particles.
It is safe if you take the necessary precautions and use the proper equipment when doing so. Our staff use full body suits with ventilators to protect themselves from any particles coming in contact with their body. It’s also important to use safe procedures during the removal process to make sure you don’t encourage the fibres to become airborne where they can endanger humans.
Our main goal is to offer safe asbestos removal at a reasonable price. The price is a direct reflection of:
- how much of the material is present – typically measured in m2
- location of the asbestos within the structure and
- ease of access into the property itself
- the nature of the replacement material
- whether it’s an entire roof or just supporting structural areas (eves, walls etc).
The above factors determine the amount of time we must spend and the amount of equipment required. This is reflected in the overall cost to you. We only use fully qualified asbestos removalists. To get an accurate estimate for the cost of asbestos removal we really need you to contact us first, so we can provide a customised quote for your individual situation. Costs vary from job to job significantly
We use a licenced asbestos transporter who disposes of the material at the closest registered waste facility/tip. After asbestos removal we NEVER dispose of asbestos improperly or illegally.
As a precaution, we ask all residents to vacate during asbestos removal. This is usually from early morning to mid-afternoon and allows enough time for removal, vacuuming, spray sealing and an independent inspection.
If you are employing a fully qualified, licenced asbestos removalist such as us, you are not required to notify any authorities as this will be done by the removalist. We notify QLD Workplace Health & Safety prior to removal and we may also notify Energex if we are working close to their infrastructure on your behalf.
